Amsterdam is notorious for its underground electronic dance music scene, but there’s more. With a city that has so much to offer, it’s hard to know what’s good. Here’s a quick guide to some of Amsterdam’s best (underground) clubs…
If you have a thing for underground Detroit/Chicago influenced house and techno music, keep an eye out for Dekmantel, Rushhour and MyHouse events – the hottest in town. You probably heard of Trouw, a notorious underground club in Amsterdam that unfortunately closed its doors in early 2016. But luckily, the founders opened up a new club in Amsterdam West: De School. Next to this venue, some of the best underground clubs in Amsterdam are Shelter, Radion, OT301 and The Warehouse. Are you ready to rave till the early morning?
If you like house and/or techhouse music Chicago Social Club, Canvasopde7e and Disco Dolly are some of the best options in Amsterdam. The venues are relatively intimate, the crowd is packed with locals in their 20s to early 30 and line-ups include international and local talent. Some great events to attend are Awakenings, Voltt or Verknipt.
Live performances in Amsterdam are best enjoyed at Melkweg or Paradiso, but check the program before heading out because the events differ greatly. Pop, rock, soul and techno are all on the menu at these clubs. If you enjoy soul, funk, hiphop and jazz, try the Wicked Jazz Sounds event, it’s a great combination of live music & DJing.
Dig the sound of HipHop music? It’s not the beat that rocks this city, but clubs such as Jimmy Woo, Bitterzoet, l’Elephant, Canvas or Paradiso are a good guess to get your game on! Be sure to check their program as events differ greatly depending on the night.
But what if you don’t want to party, and enjoy listening to classic music? Without a doubt, Amsterdam’s Concert hall – just 1 min from the famous Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum – is your best bet. Concertgebouw is one of the world’s most iconic classic music venues with regular performances from industry leaders. Another amazing option is Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ: stunning architecture, just a few minutes off Amsterdam central station.
