Bo-Kaap Iconic neighborhood

Bo-Kaap is a historic area that became home to many Muslims and freed slaves after the abolition of slavery, forming a hub of local Islamic culture and heritage. Colourful houses, steep cobbled streets, the muezzin’s calls to prayer, and children traditionally dressed for Madrassa, make a visit to the Bo-Kaap a unique Cape experience. In recent years, Cape Town’s exponential economic development and expansion together with the demise of forced racial segregation under apartheid, has made Bo-Kaap property very sought after. Gentrification is slowly dissolving the distinctive character of Bo-Kaap as wealthy outsiders move into the suburb.
