The arts scene in Kampala is small but vibrant. Interact with some of the local artists and get a feel of the growing arts vibe by joining in some of the regular jam sessions that take place within the city, such as;
Ngoma Jam Sessions is a drum community that hosts Drum Circles twice a month, and is a great way to tune into the rhythm of the city. They meet in the Gardens at Safari Homes in Kamwokya, at 18:00hrs every 2nd and 4th Friday of the Month, and have a collection of traditional drums and djembes on which you can tap along to, as a drum facilitator leads you through some fun drum games and free style sessions. Everyone is welcome to join in, regardless of drumming experience.
Milege Acoustic Project is a non commercial platform for creative expression, that hosts open mic nights where local artists can showcase their talent, ranging form music, dance, poetry and storytelling. The shows take place every Thursday at the Makerere University Guest House gardens from 19:30-22:30hrs And every Friday at Kyambogo University’s Peace park from 19:30hrs-22:30hrs.
Kampala Voices is a community choir that meet every Monday at 18:30hrs at the Goethe Zentrum, on Bukoto Street, to sing a’capella songs all taught by ear. Community singing is about getting together, having fun, and creating harmony. No music reading or prior experience is required to join in, and voices of all shapes and sizes are welcome to take part.
