“…to reflect the essential features of his character – concentrated spirituality, creative force and simplicity of life”. With this idea, the architects of the museum won a limited competition. They were selected to design a sober dignified building in a unified architectural setting. Calouste Sarkis Gulbekian, the collector, was a British businessman with a passion for art. Throughout his life he gathered an immense and spectacular art collection. His wide-ranging collection covers various periods and areas: Egyptian, Islamic and Oriental art, old coins and European paintings and decorative arts like jewelry by René Lalique. The phrase “only the best” accurately defines the criteria by which he was guided. And “only the best” is what you’ll get when visiting the Gulbenkian Museum.
