Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga Museum for ancient art

Opened in 1884 by king Dom Luiz I, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (MNAA) is a museum for ancient art. It’s located in the former palace of the counts of Alvor and in the old monastery ‘Santo Alberto’. The chapel of this monastery is a beautiful example of 18th century baroque architecture and is itself part of the exhibition. Some people say MNAA is one of the most important (ancient) art museums in Portugal and probably even in Europe. It’s clear they have a good reason to make a statement like that…
