Ara Pacis Augustae Historic monument & museum

This striking monument and museum goes by the name of Ara Pacis Augustae (the Latin translation meaning “Alter of Augustan Peace”), an ancient altar dedicated to the Roman goddess of peace: Pax. Due to its original location in the former flood plain of the Tiber River, the altar was buried under four meters of silt deposits. Over time many attempts were made to recover and restore parts of the Ara Pacis, however the vast majority was recovered in the twentieth century.
